In the past the majority of documents were either stored or converted to Microfilm.

Unlike Microfilm scanned images are easily accessible and useable. The benefits of image over microfilm is many and this has meant many companies not only scanning current documents to image but also bring old documents out of storage for scanning and even converting previously converted microfilm to image.
